Maxwell Associate Professor Shannon Monnat on Solving the Opioid Crisis
, associate professor of sociology and the Lerner Chair for Public Health Promotion, was recently featured as an expert panelist for a New York Times article regarding the opioid crisis in America. The article featured a hypothetical: given $100 billion over five years to solve the opioid crisis, how would this panel of expert allocate the money?
Monnat chose community development to receive the lion’s share of the money, saying that, “this will attack the opioid epidemic, but it will also be beneficial for other pressing public health problems. I would include in this funding building opportunities/outlets for social cohesion, community engagement and civic participation,” she said
