Photographers Lynn Johnson, John Moore to headline Alexia Photojournalism Seminar and Competition Feb. 22

Renowned photographers Lynn Johnson and John Moore will serve as keynoters for the Alexia Photojournalism Seminar and Competition on Friday, Feb. 22, at 4 p.m. in Room 101 Newhouse 1. The annual event is sponsored by the and hosted by the Newhouse School. The competition and judging will take place on Saturday, Feb. 23, at 10 a.m. in the same location.

Lynn Johnson

Johnson recently joined the Newhouse School as the inaugural visiting professional in the Department of Multimedia Photography and Design. She has produced photography projects for magazines such as National Geographic, Life, Fortune and Forbes. Though she has photographed notables from Tiger Woods to the entire Supreme Court, her favorite assignments are emotionally demanding stories about ordinary people. Her work has earned numerous awards, including seven Golden Quills for Photojournalism, four World Press Photography Awards and a Picture of the Year Award from the National Press Photographers Association.

John Moore

Moore is a senior staff photographer for Getty Images. His work has earned top photography awards over the years, including the 2005 Pulitzer Prize. He has extensively covered wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, working in the some of the world’s most dangerous combat zones. In 2008, he won both Magazine Photographer of the Year from Pictures of the Year International and Photographer of the Year from the National Press Photographers Association.

Alexia Foundation

The Alexia Foundation was founded by Peter and Aphrodite Tsairis in memory of their daughter, Alexia Tsairis, a victim of the 1988 terrorist bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. At the time of her death, Tsairis was a junior photojournalism student in the Newhouse School. The Alexia Competition awards professional and student photographers whose work gives insight into cultural differences and voices to victims of social injustice.
