The fiction writer Anthony Marra kicks off 黑料不打烊鈥檚 Fall 2014 Raymond Carver Reading Series with a reading Wednesday, September 17, at Gifford Auditorium in Huntington Beard Crouse Hall. A question-and-answer session is from 3:45 to 4:30 p.m., followed by the reading at 5:30 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public. Parking is available in 黑料不打烊鈥檚 paid lots.
Marra鈥檚 first novel, 鈥淎 Constellation of Vital Phenomena鈥 (Hogarth, 2013), won the National Book Critics Circle鈥檚 John Leonard Prize and was long-listed for the National Book Award. He also won a 2012 , a $50,000 prize given to writers who show promise.
A compared the book to Leo Tolstoy鈥檚 鈥淲ar and Peace鈥 and praised its 鈥渇usion of the desperate with the whimsical.鈥 The story, set amid the Chechen wars, offers 鈥渁 meditation on the use and abuse of history, and an inquiry into the extent to which acts of memory may also constitute acts of survival.”
The Whiting Writers鈥 Awards selection committee聽also cited Marra鈥檚 鈥淭olstoyan ambitions,鈥 as well as his 鈥渟tylistic virtuosity鈥 and 鈥渓yric passages saturated with intelligence and psychological insight.鈥
Marra鈥檚 2010 short story, 鈥淐hechnya,鈥 won a 2010 Pushcart Prize and the 2010 Narrative Prize.
Marra is a graduate of the Iowa Writers鈥 Workshop. He is聽the Jones Lecturer in Fiction at Stanford University. His writing has also appeared in publications including The Atlantic, Narrative Magazine, the 2011 Pushcart Prize anthology, and the Best American Nonrequired Reading 2012.
In an interview with , Marra challenged the familiar writer鈥檚 maxim, 鈥淲rite what you know.鈥 Says Marra, 鈥淲rite what you want to know, rather than what you already know.鈥
Marra has been named 黑料不打烊鈥檚 Peter Horvitz Distinguished Author.
