This year’s , restructured and focused around the theme of sustainability in recognition of the 40^th anniversary of Earth Day, has announced its upcoming schedule of events. The Monday, April 19, day-long program, coordinated through the , will feature forums and activities revolving around the featured SU Showcase fellows presentations on��the Quad.

Open to all students at ���ϲ����� and the , Showcase Fellows may be self-nominated or nominated by a professor, and if chosen will have the opportunity to highlight their sustainability-related class project.

Many other Showcase events will be held at various times across the SU and ESF campuses. These include student and class presentations, visits by local high school students, open classrooms, career forums, a lecture by “Don’t Be Such a Scientist” author Randy Olson, performances in Hendricks Chapel, public debates about sustainability by the SU Debate Society, the Waverly Rain Garden dedication and a showing of Olson’s film “Sizzle.”

Waverly Rain Garden Dedication
Official unveiling of SU’s first rain garden designed to reduce stormwater runoff and enhance campus sustainability.

SU Showcase Kick-Off, Welcome SU Showcase Fellows and Visiting High School Students
Faculty, SU Showcase Fellows and high school students will discuss the issues of sustainability as a way to frame the goals and purposes of the day. People’s Place tea and bagels will be served.

Political Science Department, Senior Distinction Theses Poster Session
Senior Distinction students in political science will present the results of their yearlong research projects. Topics include President Obama’s campaign rhetoric and public opinion, terrorist motivations and the Lackawanna Six, the Supreme Court and religious displays, dual citizenship in Asia, and demography and electoral behavior in the 2008 presidential election.

A Sustainable Future: Finding a Career in Green Industries
Sponsored by SU Career Services, this daylong session will feature presentations by individuals who have established careers in the “green economy,” coupled with hourly workshops on cover letters and resumes. Performance by “Art in Action”
In this performance by “Puppets and Community” and “Art in Action,” blending puppetry, theatrical scenes and music, SU students will stage a public performance “ritual” highlighting the “sustainability” of dreams. The students have identified that their hopes and dreams are, in many ways, the greatest asset that they possess. The challenge of sustaining their dreams through both the college experience and then going out into the “real” world is the spark for this giant puppet processional.

Presentations by SU Showcase Fellows
Highlights include:

• College of Human Ecology (“Menu Development” HPM 214 and “Seminar in Food and Nutrition” NSD 680) students presenting information about campus attitudes toward sustainable food choices; and
• ESF’s Green Campus Initative Student organization providing a “nuts and bolts” overview of how to have your student organization become effective campus advocates for sustainability.

Sustaining SU: A Performance by SU Service Workers and Students
A collaboration��among members of SU service workers,��SU undergraduate students and faculty, this performance will feature a collection of personal stories and reflections on the lives of service workers at SU. The performance will be directed by Leslie Noble, Department of Drama, and peformed by SEIU members Teichera Price, Gertrude Danzy, Rebecca Vincent and��William Brown, and SU student Roxanne Bocyck.

“Don’t Be Such a Scientist” lecture by filmmaker and author Randy Olson
There is strong scientific consensus that the climate is warming and humans are largely responsible. Yet polls suggest Americans are less likely to accept this view than they were a few years ago. In this presentation, former biology professor turned filmmaker Olson offers advice on how scientists and students can better convey their ideas about climate change and other issues to a skeptical public. Olson has recently published a book on the subject, ��(Island Press, 2009).

Sustaining Relationships/Sustaining Privacy
SU Showcase is proud to help support��SU College of Law and the Moot Court Honor Society’s 38th Annual Mackenzie Hughes LLP, Edmund H. Lewis Appellate Advocacy Competition. Taking on the complex issues relating to an individual’s personal privacy as well as religious beliefs, arguments will be presented on two specific issues: whether foreign spouses married in traditional ceremonies are entitled to the same eligibility as that extended to partners married under official foreign law and whether the misuse of a Social Security number constitutes a crime involving moral turpitude. This event will feature oral arguments from SU law students in front of a distinguished panel of judges, culminating in a “decision” being rendered.�� This is an ideal event for students who want to experience how a career in law can sustain fundamental values of individual and religious freedom.

Film: “Sizzle: A Global Warming Comedy”
“Sizzle: A Global Warming Comedy” is the new feature by award-winning filmmaker and scientist Olson about the controversy surrounding global warming. Part documentary and part mockumentary, “Sizzle” takes a serious and humorous look at this contentious issue. “Sizzle” is a follow-up to Olson’s widely praised feature film “Flock of Dodos,” which presents contemporary public debates over the teaching of evolution and intelligent design in American schools.
