The recipients of the 2002 Division of Student Affairs Vice President’s Awards were announced May 1 at the Division of Student Affairs SUIQ Spring Reception, held at the Sheraton ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ Hotel and Conference Center. Chancellor Kenneth A. Shaw and Senior Vice President and Dean of Student Affairs Barry L. Wells presided over the awards ceremony.

The awards were developed to recognize the professional excellence of Student Affairs staff, and the division’s active support and personification of ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ’s five core values (quality, caring, diversity, innovation and service) and the principles of ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ Improving Quality. Awards were also established for undergraduate and graduate student staff members who made outstanding contributions to the division. This year, the Collaborations Award was established to recognize an outstanding contributor to the division in terms of collaboration and cooperation.

“These awards present an opportunity for the Division of Student Affairs to recognize the outstanding innovations and efforts of our colleagues while inspiring all of us to strive for excellence and quality in the work we do,” said Wells.

The award recipients include the following individuals:

? Vice President’s “Students First” Award for Excellence–William Clark, supervising pharmacist at Health Services, Thanya Jeanty, residence director in the Office of Residence Life and Casey Morris, facilities and technical supervisor in the Office of Student Centers and Programming Services, were recognized for their extraordinary efforts on behalf of students.

? Vice President’s Award for Quality–This award recognizes an individual or group that significantly improved a process and/or participated in quality initiatives. Honored this year were Mitch Gartenberg, director, David Sargalski, assistant director for facilities, aquatics and wellness, and Nick Wetter, manager of the Tennity Ice Skating Pavilion, all from the Department of Recreation Services.

? Vice President’s Award for Service–A team from Health Services was recognized for contributing to the quality of life outside of ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ and improving connections with the community-at-large. The honored team included Health Services staff members Pat Atkinson, R.N.; Connie Barker, pharmacist; Sue Bell, R.N.; Nancy Bowden, team assistant; Linda Bruce, nurse practitioner; Merrie Dyer, L.P.N.; Brigitte Hale, pharmacy clerk; Ruth Horner, receptionist; Kathy MacLachlan, nurse practitioner; Teri Rinella, team assistant; Carol Rolince, nurse practitioner; Millie Sauter, nurse practitioner; and Mary Waldron, R.N.

? Vice President’s Award for Caring–Helen Germain, resource manager in the Center for Career Services, was honored as an individual who nurtures the well being of others by demonstrating exemplary concern.

? Vice President’s Award for Diversity–Cynthia Fulford, assistant director of the Center for Career Services, was recognized for significant contributions to advancing issues of diversity, multiculturalism and/or international worldview at ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ.

? Vice President’s Award for Innovation–Dessa Bergen-Cico, associate dean of students in the Dean of Students Office, was honored with this award, which recognizes an individual who implements a new and/or creative idea, program or process.

? Vice President’s Award for Professional Development– Michael Cahill, director of the Center for Career Services, was honored for his exceptional contributions in creating, expanding and/or improving professional opportunities for other staff.

? Vice President’s Award for Assessment–This award recognizes an individual or group that contributes to the creation of a tool or program by which information may be gathered, analyzed and interpreted to more effectively and efficiently provide services for a department, the division or the University. Michael Smithee, associate director of the Slutzker Center for International Services, was this year’s honoree.

? Vice President’s Award for Outstanding Graduate Student– Theresa Wright, graduate residence coordinator in Office of Residence Life, was recognized for going” above and beyond” in demonstrating exemplary service on behalf of a department, the division or the University.

? Vice President’s Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Student Employee- Bryan Legaspi, student staff member in Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, was recognized for going “above and beyond” in demonstrating exemplary service on behalf of a department, the division or the University.

? Division of Student Affairs Collaborations Award–Presented for the first time this year, this award recognizes an individual who has contributed significantly to and collaborated with the Division of Student Affairs, and is committed to a philosophy of student development. Gene Steckiewicz, copy center coordinator at the Schine Copy Center, is this year’s honoree.

Award recipients are selected by a committee comprised of staff members from each of the major functional areas of the division. All Student Affairs staff and full-time graduate and undergraduate students employed by the division are eligible for nomination and recognition.
