Sonya Clark, a craft artist and chair of the craft/material studies department at Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of the Arts, will present a lecture on Tuesday, Sept. 14, at 6:30 p.m. in Shemin Auditorium in the Dorothea Ilgen Shaffer Art Building. The lecture is sponsored by the Department of Art in the ’ (VPA) School of Art and Design.
Clark has exhibited her work in more than 100 venues, including those in the United Kingdom, Brazil, South Africa, Canada, Taiwan, Austria, Australia, France and Switzerland. In the United States, her work has been shown in such museums as the Newark (N.J.) Museum, the Fowler Museum at UCLA, the Boise (Idaho) Art Museum, the Bellevue (Wash.) Arts Museum, Philbrook Museum of Art in Oklahoma, the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African Art and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City.
Clark holds a master of fine arts degree from Cranbrook Academy of Art, a bachelor of fine arts degree from the Art Institute of Chicago and a bachelor’s degree from Amherst College. She is the recipient of the Romnes Award, Chenven Award, Lillian Elliott Award, a Wisconsin Arts Board fellowship, a Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio residency and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award.
