Four music professors from Central New York will come together on Sunday, Jan. 29, for a performance of chamber music with organ at ºÚÁϲ»´òìÈ. The concert, the first Malmgren Concert of the spring 2012 semester, will begin at 4 p.m. in Hendricks Chapel and is free and open to the public. Free parking will be available in the Irving Garage.
Although the pipe organ has a large corpus of solo repertoire and is frequently used to accompany choral ensembles, it is not often heard in chamber music, as the placement of the organ often hinders communication between performers.
The performers will be Kola Owolabi, assistant professor of music in the Rose, Jules R., and Stanford S. Setnor School of Music in SU’s College of Visual and Performing Arts and University Organist (organ); Peter Rovit, assistant professor of music in the Setnor School (violin); Elizabeth Simkin, associate professor of performance studies at Ithaca College (cello); and Gabriel DiMartino, instructor in the Setnor School (trumpet).
The program will include Josef Rheinberger’s Suite for violin, cello and organ, and rarely heard works for trumpet and organ by Tomaso Albinoni, Fritz Werner and Allen Vizzutti.
The concert is part of the Malmgren Concert Series at Hendricks Chapel. The series was made possible by a generous gift to Hendricks Chapel from alumna Esther Malmgren ’42 in 1991. The free concerts, held throughout the year, feature a wide variety of music. Upcoming concerts in the Malmgren Concert Series include the Blue Heron Renaissance Vocal Ensemble (March 27) and the Hendricks Chapel Choir Spring 2012 Concert (April 22).
