McNally has worked in 60 countries shooting stories and covers for many of the major magazines of the world. He has worked as a contract photographer for Sports Illustrated and a staff photographer at Life magazine, and has been an ongoing contributor to National Geographic for 25 years.
McNally shot “The Future of Flying,” the first all-digital coverage in the history of National Geographic, which was later acquired for preservation by the Library of Congress. In the immediate aftermath of 9/11, he created “The Faces of Ground Zero” using the world’s only life-sized Polaroid camera. As a traveling exhibition and a book, the project helped raise approximately $2 million for 9/11 relief efforts.
McNally has penned several bestselling photo books, photographed the noteworthy, won many photo honors and prizes and writes a about being a shooter.
He is a graduate of the Newhouse School and was inducted into the last fall.
