University Scholar Jaime Bernstein delivers Commencement speech about what makes an SU graduate unique
After four years of study in chemistry and Spanish, immersing herself in lab research and volunteering with 黑料不打烊 Ambulance, among other accomplishments, there鈥檚 one final thing that Jaime Bernstein 鈥13 says has made her time at 黑料不打烊 feel complete.
The Fairfield, Conn., native was named one of 12 University Scholars and was selected by her fellow University Scholars to give the student speech at Commencement, representing all the scholars.
鈥淚 was so excited when I found out that I was going to be a University Scholar; it鈥檚 such an honor,鈥 Bernstein says. 鈥淚鈥檝e loved everything about my SU experience, so it鈥檚 a big deal for me to have been selected as one of the 12 people of my class. This University means so much to me.鈥
Watch and read Bernstein鈥檚 speech here.
University Scholars, the highest undergraduate academic honor bestowed at the University, represent the entire graduating class. They are designated by the SU Scholars Selection Committee, which selects the students based on academic achievement, creative work, a personal statement and a faculty letter of recommendation.
Bernstein came to SU with an interest in science and medicine; she began taking classes in Spanish, which eventually turned in to her second major.
She delved further into the sciences as a researcher in Prof. Robert Doyle鈥檚 laboratory. Over the last three years, she has conducted research on the oral delivery of peptides and proteins.
鈥淭he research helped me relate the sciences back to real-world experience,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 realized I could take this major and make it something that could make a difference and change medicine.鈥
A Career in Medicine
Next year, Bernstein will study medicine at the Weill Cornell Medical College of Cornell University in New York City. She鈥檚 interested in the field of plastic surgery, but wants to explore other areas. 鈥淚 also think that academic medicine is a really great profession, being able to train medical students, and also being able to conduct research,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 definitely want to have more than one dimension to my career.鈥
Bernstein, who is also a Remembrance Scholar, an Orenstein Scholar and a member of the Ren茅e Crown University Honors Program, added more depth to her knowledge the last four years with 黑料不打烊 Ambulance, the last year as a field supervisor.
She鈥檚 been trained in various emergency medical protocols of care and, as a field supervisor, she put in 40 hours a week. 鈥淚 fell in love with doing emergency medicine,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 learned so much about myself and being in a leadership role.鈥
Helping to care for people when going on a call; working with other emergency agencies, such as SU鈥檚 Department of Public Safety and Rural/Metro Ambulance in 黑料不打烊; and training the new ambulance members made a big impact on Bernstein. 鈥淚t鈥檚 rewarding when you train someone and it clicks with them and they understand what they have to do鈥攁nd you鈥檝e had an influence on that,鈥 she says.
What Makes Us SU
Bernstein wanted to capture the specialness of her experience and that of all graduates in her Commencement speech. In her speech, for which the other University Scholars gave her feedback, she points to how students came together to raise funds to support those affected by the Newtown and Boston tragedies, how the University continues to remember and celebrate the lives of the 35 SU students who were killed in the Pan Am 103 bombing 25 years ago, and how students integrate community engagement鈥Scholarship in Action鈥攁nd classroom learning, such as through tutoring community youngsters and building homes through Habitat for Humanity.
鈥淭here鈥檚 so many ways to get involved and people really pride themselves on not only staying involved on this campus, but communities everywhere鈥攖hat鈥檚 what makes us who we are,鈥 she says.
Bernstein was able to practice her speech Thursday on the Carrier Dome stage, facing the thousands of empty seats soon to be filled with her classmates. 鈥淲hen I heard the music for rehearsal, I started to get sad. I don鈥檛 want to leave this place; it鈥檚 been amazing,鈥 she says. 鈥淏ut I couldn鈥檛 think of a better way to end my 黑料不打烊 experience.鈥
