Expert Grygiel on Myanmar’s “Free” Facebook

After as a Myanmar program allowed citizens to access Facebook for free, users skyrocketed to upwards of 30 million. However, the site then became a leading cause in the spread of fake news.
For CBS News, Newhouse social media expert Jennifer Grygiel explained what is going on.
“I think one of the key things in Myanmar is that social medias, primarily Facebook, was rolled out in collaboration with the government through a program called Free Basics there,” she said. “It was done in partnership and rolled out in conjunction with the state-owned telecom.” For the full interview, listen here.
