Why the Live in Facebook’s Live Stream is a Problem
Facebook is having an issue with its live streaming feature. The social media service has the capability to stream live videos including gristly crimes and suicides being broadcast across the platform. For the New York Daily News, Newhouse social media professor Jennifer Grygiel explained the issue, and gave some suggestions in solving it.
“The issue with live-streaming is that it’s live,” said Grygiel. “When they opened this product to every single user, they took a huge risk when they didn’t open it with content moderation on the Facebook level.”
She also added some potential solutions.
“Live-streaming in other communications industries is typically run on a delay, and monitored, or it’s run by professionals. Opening this feature up to the masses has created a situation where violent crime is broadcast without any attempt by the company to prevent this from happening.”
