The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Resource Center is hosting the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance commemoration on Thursday, Nov. 29, at 7:30 p.m. in 214 Slocum Hall. The event is recognized internationally on Nov. 20; the LGBT Resource Center is hosting the commemorative event on Nov. 29 to provide students and campus community members with an opportunity to honor the day.
This year’s keynote speaker is Ruby Corado, an advocate for LGBTQ human rights, transgender liberation, immigration equality, access to health care and anti-violence for more than 20 years. Together with a group of friends, Corado founded Casa Ruby LGBT Community Center in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. is the only LGBTQ bilingual and multicultural organization in the area, employing nearly 50 people and providing services to more than 6,000 Queer and Trans individuals each year.
“Trans Day of Remembrance is a day where we memorialize those who have been murdered as a result of transphobia and raise awareness about the continued violence endured by the transgender community,” says Jorge Castillo, assistant director of the LGBT Resource Center. “We’re honored to bring Ruby to campus to share her work on social justice issues facing transgender, genderqueer and gender non-conforming people across the world.”
