Whitney Phillips, assistant professor of communication and rhetorical studies in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, was quoted in the Vice (France) story “.” Phillips, an expert in misinformation, says that it may be too late for social networks to implement more moderation and educational work when it comes to combating misinformation. “Twitter is committed to the spread of false information and that’s a good thing, but this warning and fact-checking phenomenon should have been done a long time ago. Social networks can’t wave their magic eraser and hope the problem will go away on its own,” says Phillips.
