“How K-12 Book Bans Affect Higher Education.”
Kal Alston, professor and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the School of Education, was quoted in the Inside Higher Ed story “” Alston, an expert on the philosophy of education, discussed her concerns about how many books are currently being challenged both by parents and school administrators in K-12 education. The issue is becoming particularly prevalent in Advanced Placement classes in high schools.
“I do think that were we to follow this logic of ‘parents should control the curriculum,’ we’d end up in a worse place for students coming into college, because it’s not just critical thinking that’s imperative for college student success but also independent thinking,” Alston said.
