September marks the start of Latinx Hispanic Heritage Month (LHHM)! LHHM is Sept. 15 through Oct. 15. This year is the fourteenth annual program hosted by the Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) in collaboration with other campus partners. Throughout the month, there are a ton of ways to celebrate and get involved, including art exhibits, festivals, musical and dance performances and so much more!
Check out some of this years LHHM highlights:
Opening Parade and Ceremony
The celebration starts Monday, Sept. 16 with a parade down the Einhorn Family Walk starting at 11:30 a.m. Following the parade, the campus community is invited to the opening ceremony and lunch in Bird Library 550.
Fiesta Latina
OMA, the Office of Multicultural Advancement and Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity, Inc. are hosting Fiesta Latina on Saturday, Sept. 21, at 6:30 p.m. in Goldstein Auditorium. There鈥檒l be Latin cuisine, live entertainment and performances by Raices, Fulanito and Oro Solido. Be sure to get your ticket at the box office for $5 with an SU I.D.
Torneo de Futbol
Calling all you futbol lovers! Don鈥檛 miss out on the second annual futbol tournament on Oct. 5 at noon in the Barnes Center at The Arch. Stay tuned for more details!
Commemorative Guest Speaker
Denise Frohman is coming to campus on Oct. 15 to give the LHHM commemorative address in partnership with the LGBT Resource Center. She is a poet, educator and performer from New York City and a former Women of the World Poetry Slam Champion. She also co-organizes #PoetsforPuertoRico. More information will be available on OMA鈥檚 website in the coming weeks.
Inclusivity
This year, the University is using Latinx instead of Latino to be inclusive of all gender identities. So let鈥檚 all enjoy Latinx Hispanic Heritage Month together!
