New York State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, Assemblymember William Magnarelli Announce $3M Investment in JMA Wireless Dome Renovation Project /blog/2024/07/23/new-york-state-assembly-speaker-carl-heastie-assemblymember-william-magnarelli-announce-3m-investment-in-jma-wireless-dome-renovation-project/ Tue, 23 Jul 2024 15:13:55 +0000 /?p=201602 New York State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and Assemblymember William Magnarelli today announced a $3 million investment to support and advance the transformative JMA Wireless Dome renovation project. The pair made the announcement during a press conference at the JMA Dome flanked by ϲ leaders and several coaches, including Adrian Autry, head men’s basketball coach, Fran Brown, head football coach, Gary Gait, head men’s lacrosse coach, and Felisha Legette-Jack, head women’s basketball coach.

“The JMA Wireless Dome has sat at the heart of ϲ’s campus for decades,” says Heastie. “Assemblymember Bill Magnarelli was committed to ensuring this stadium is around for future generations to enjoy and I’m honored to join him and so many members of the ϲ community here today for this announcement.”

The new funding will be directed toward current renovations underway which include replacement of all existing aluminum bench seats with a complete seating system featuring high-impact polymer seats with backs. These renovations also include modifications to existing stairs and railings, as well as ramps and platforms, to enable the facility to achieve Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance as a result of the physical changes created by the reseating. ADA accessible wheelchair platforms are also being added throughout the lower seating bowl, more than doubling the number of ADA wheelchair spaces. Finally, an upgraded building wide fire alarm system and new smoke evacuation system are being installed and new fire sprinklers are being added throughout the facility.

“The Dome is not only a monument in the ϲ landscape but in our community’s culture as well,” says Magnarelli. “Investing in the Dome will allow ϲ to continue to bring world-class sporting events and entertainment to the ϲ community. I am proud to have secured this funding for ϲ as it allows it to continue enhancing the opportunities for engaging residents in Central New York and visitors to our area.”

For more than 40 years, ϲ’s iconic Dome has served as a catalyst of economic activity benefiting the City of ϲ, Onondaga County and the broader Central New York region. Each year, more than 935,000 visitors attend events at the Dome, and those events include concerts by some of the world’s top performers, college and professional athletic competitions, and the very best in family entertainment. The Dome also hosts local and statewide high school sports events, band competitions and other community-focused activities. As a year-round venue, Dome events and operations contribute more than $240 million in income to the Central New York economy and support more than 5,000 local jobs.

“ϲ is grateful for our deep partnerships with and the strong support of New York State, Speaker Heastie, Assemblymember Magnarelli and so many other elected officials and community leaders,” says Mike Haynie, vice chancellor for strategic initiatives and innovation. “Thanks to this new funding, the University will not only be able to advance the Dome transformation but also accelerate the work. From premier entertainment experiences to exciting Orange athletic events and community gatherings, ϲ’s Dome has been a driver of economic vitality for over four decades. With each event, it not only entertains members of the Central New York community and visitors alike, but also fuels the local economy, generating millions in tourism dollars and supporting thousands of jobs.”

Recently, the University completed the initial work associated with its $120 million transformation that improved the visitor experience and further positioned the venue and region to compete nationally for large concerts, events and NCAA competitions. Renovations included the installation of a new fixed roof, air conditioning and a state-of-the-art 5G network, as well as significant improvements to accessibility, technology, lighting and sound, and the concession experience.

“ϲ is not just renovating a building, but reshaping an entire experience,” says John Wildhack ’80, director of athletics. “With a commitment to excellence, we’re shaping a future where student-athletes, fans and our community can enjoy an unparalleled experience every time they play in, attend an event or visit the Dome. With the new football season just around the corner, I am confident the environment will be more electric than ever. Thanks to terrific community and government support and partnerships, the Dome continues to be one of the most exciting venues to visit.”

As part of the work currently underway, the University is also in the process of constructing Miron Victory Court, an enclosed pedestrian concourse that will physically connect the stadium and the Barnes Center at The Arch, among other enhancements. This new space is expected to be complete later this fall.

Raising Guide Dog Puppies on Campus: How Students Are Helping Make a Difference for the Blind /blog/2024/07/08/raising-guide-dog-puppies-on-campus-how-students-are-helping-make-a-difference-for-the-blind/ Mon, 08 Jul 2024 20:14:48 +0000 /?p=201146 Black dog wearing a blue vest sitting on a dock on a sunny day.

Tarzan

Have you met Tarzan or Juan yet on campus? These latest members of the University community are hard to miss, with their friendly dispositions, shiny coats and wagging tails.

Tarzan, a one-year-old black lab, and Juan, afour-month-old yellow lab, are puppies being raised by good friends Arianna Kuhn ’25 and Megan Panny ’25 for , a nonprofit organization that trains and cares for guide dogs for people with vision loss.

Kuhn, a biology major in the College of Arts and Sciences, and Panny, a dual degree English major in the College of Arts and Sciences and School of Education, became involved through outreach being done on campus by Mary Oonk, the organization’s local volunteer region co-coordinator.

Headquartered in Yorktown Heights, New York, Guiding Eyes for the Blind has puppy raisers along the Eastern Seaboard from Maine to North Carolina, including in Central New York. Founded in 1954, the organization, with more than 1,700 volunteers, provides all of their services free of charge.

Kuhn was interested in the organization after reading about its mission. “I am passionate about giving back to the community and wanted to have a positive impact on an individual that would benefit from the services of Guiding Eyes,” she says. “In addition to the opportunity to volunteer, the chance to combine my devotion to helping others and my love for dogs drew me to want to take part in this experience.”

Panny wanted to get involved after seeing the impact it had on people’s lives firsthand. “My hometown is near the Guiding Eyes for the Blind headquarters, which has given me the ability to see how the program works throughout my life,” Panny says. “When I saw the opportunity to be involved through ϲ, it was one I was excited about. This program has allowed me to help others while also fulfilling the love I have for animals.”

The organization was first connected with the University through a simple phone call: Oonk called the JMA Wireless Dome box office to order basketball tickets and started talking to the representative about the work of Guiding Eyes for the Blind. “I explained to him the work I do for Guiding Eyes for the Blind, and that socialization of these puppies is a huge part of that and asked if there was a way we could bring the dogs into the JMA Dome for training,” Oonk says. “The next thing I know, I got a meeting with the entire team at the JMA Dome.”

Training Space for Pups

Mary Oonk

The JMA Dome offers a good training experience for the puppies. Guide dogs must navigate large spaces, like an arena, with stairs, elevators and expansive areas.

“Mary approached us about hosting a one-time training class with the volunteers and puppies, but we worked with them to create something more where they could come into the JMA Dome for regular training and even attend a women’s basketball game so that the puppies could be exposed to a live event in the Dome,” says Pete Sala, vice president and chief facilities officer. The organization has had a relationship with the JMA Dome since 2015—volunteers come approximately once a month to walk the arena, attend a game or train.

While the experience in the Dome is invaluable, Oonk says the group was hoping to find a way to get students involved with the program. A University campus makes an ideal learning and socialization space for raising guide dogs, with a variety of spaces and situations and groups of people.

Life-Changing Experience

In Summer 2022, Stephen Kuusisto, University Professor and director of interdisciplinary programs and outreach for the Burton Blatt Institute, met with local volunteers and their puppies and shared his story about how his life changed since getting his first dog, Corky, from Guide Eyes for the Blind.

“A lot of things were going on in my life that were difficult, including losing an adjunct teaching job and becoming unemployed,” says Kuusisto. “So I suddenly thought, well, here I am, really visually impaired, and have nothing on the calendar. Why not get a guide dog?”

His life was forever changed. Kuusisto went from not really going anywhere without the dependence of a friend and their schedule to going wherever he wanted, whenever he wanted.

“I spent the next month walking everywhere from country roads to Midtown Manhattan, learning that I could trust this dog with my life,” Kuusisto says.

Kuusisto, who is forever grateful for the volunteers at Guiding Eyes for the Blind, connected Oonk with the Student Experience team during the Fall 2022 semester, who was very supportive in finding ways to gain student volunteers for the puppy raising program. “We are so grateful for the University’s support. Everyone we’ve worked with on campus has become an integral part of the Guiding Eyes mission,” says Oonk.

The only stipulation for students wanting to be involved with raising puppies on campus is that they cannot live in North Campus student housing; puppies in training are, however, allowed in South Campus housing. But that was no problem; even for those students who live on North Campus or perhaps have a busy schedule that wouldn’t allow for puppy raising, there are still many ways to get involved with the program.

The campus program got a boost when the Guiding Eyes for the Blind group was invited to table at the Fall 2023 student involvement fair. Kuhn and Panny saw the opportunity to take their love for dogs and make a difference in someone’s life.

Invaluable Lessons in Community

Kuhn says one of her favorite parts about this program is the community of Guiding Eyes volunteers.

Two people standing together with a black dog standing right by them at the ϲ Mets stadium.

“These individuals have taught me countless invaluable lessons outside of just puppy raising that I will carry with me into my future endeavors,” Kuhn says. “As I have embarked on my puppy raising journey, it has been life-changing to see the impact that this organization and its pups have on the lives of not only individuals with visual impairments but the lives of us as raisers as well.”

Panny agrees. “The Central New York region of Guiding Eyes has so many wonderful people and has provided me with a home away from home while at school. I have also loved my time training our puppies. This program and time spent with the pups is one I will cherish forever,” she says.

For others who might want to get involved, Kuhn says the organization is a great way to give back and be of service to others. “Within this program, there are countless ways to get involved, including campus volunteer work, puppy raising and sitting, as well as home socialization, among other ways,” she says.

Guiding Eyes is not only fulfilling but goes on to change the lives of those who receive the pup they have raised,” Panny says. “Many involved in the programs have also gained lifelong friendships with whom their pup goes on to guide!”

Interested in becoming a puppy raiser or looking for other ways to get involved? Faculty and staff are welcome to get involved with the program too. “In guide dog training, we talk a lot about relationship-based training. The dogs learn to build a relationship with their puppy raiser and then their formal guide dog trainer and finally they transfer that relationship to the partner they are matched with to form a lifelong bond,” says Oonk. “Relationship building is what we have strived to do with the campus community. Administration, faculty, staff and students have come together to support these dogs that will go on to change lives.”

Miron Victory Court Construction /blog/2024/06/20/miron-victory-court-construction/ Thu, 20 Jun 2024 14:02:20 +0000 /?p=200897 Campus Planning, Design and Construction and our local contractors continue the work on the Miron Victory Court addition to the JMA Wireless Dome. To allow for site work at the north end of the addition, the current fenced area needs to be expanded. This will allow for new hardscape in front of Miron Victory Court and Dome gates N, E and P.

The expanded fence footprint will mean that pedestrians can no longer walk west towards the Dome between the Physics Building and the Barnes Center at the Arch. All pedestrian traffic heading west will need to pass north of the Physics Building (the Quad side) or south of the Barnes Center at the Arch (the SUNY ESF side). This closure will remain in effect until mid-August when the area will be opened back up for the fall semester.

We appreciate your patience while we complete this work and continue to progress on this exciting project. Please Dave Warren, with Campus Planning, Design and Construction, at 315.632.5238 or dcwarren@syr.eduwith any questions or concerns.

Blizzard Forecasted to Hit the JMA Wireless Dome on Jan. 27 /blog/2024/01/22/blizzard-forecasted-to-hit-the-jma-wireless-dome-on-jan-27/ Mon, 22 Jan 2024 21:22:31 +0000 /?p=195848 Brace yourself, “The Blizzard” is coming this Saturday, Jan. 27, at 7 p.m. as the student section fills the JMA Wireless Dome dressed in white as the Orange men’s basketball team takes on N.C. State.

This special effort from Otto’s Army, ϲ’s student section, is a partnership with the Forever Orange Student Alumni Council (FOSAC) to highlight the importance of giving back.

Student section in white t-shirts in the JMA Wireless DomeGregory Slodysko ’24, president of Otto’s Army, emphasizes what the organization means to the University’s student-athletes.

“If you’ve ever seen some of the post-game interviews for football or basketball, often either our coaches or the opposing team’s coaches mention how much Otto’s Army affects each and every game. […] No team wants to play ’Cuse at home, and a large part of that belief is thanks to Otto’s Army.”

On Saturday, students will be wearing Blizzard T-shirts with QR codes on the back that lead to a link to make a gift that will go directly to Otto’s Army.

“All money raised will go directly to Otto’s Army so we can continue to improve the student section for years to come. For this reason, giving back is important because it allows Otto’s Army to remain one of the best college student sections in the nation,” Gregory says. “In the past, we have used the money raised to help fund our bus trips so that we can turn critical away games into home games and support our Orange on the road. Giving back for the Blizzard game this year will continue to help us grow and improve the gameday experience for all ϲ students.”

For the Class of 2024, the gifts are especially meaningful. A gift of at least $24 in honor of their class year means the student will receive special cords at Commencement to show that they gave back.

“Those who give back bring students to ϲ. Without them, many students wouldn’t be able to come to school here. Verizon Wireless Customers First to Access New State-of-the-Art 5G Network at JMA Wireless Dome /blog/2023/11/28/verizon-wireless-customers-first-to-access-new-state-of-the-art-5g-network-at-jma-wireless-dome/ Tue, 28 Nov 2023 16:00:49 +0000 /?p=194414 aerial photo of JMA Wireless Dome on the ϲ campus lit up in blue and orange at nightWith the 2023-24 men’s and women’s basketball seasons now underway, Orange fans with Verizon Wireless can now access the new state-of-the-art 5G system at ϲ’s JMA Wireless Dome. ϲ is actively working with AT&T and T-Mobile to make the 5G access available to their customers as soon as possible. After more than a year of work, with over 800 miles of fiber optics and hundreds of new antennas throughout the building, the new system makes the JMA Dome the most connected collegiate stadium in the U.S. and will elevate the fan experience by providing high-speed network coverage everywhere from the court to the stands to the concourse.

Employing JMA’s Distributed Antenna System (DAS), the JMA Dome now features the same quality of mobile phone connectivity, speed and performance that is comparable to many professional football stadiums across the nation—including the newest stadiums in Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

“We promised our fans a world-class event experience and with this technology, we are delivering on that promise,” says John Wildhack, director of Athletics. “Orange athletics fans are simply unmatched in their passion. Now, their fan experience will be unmatched as they engage across social medial channels, check scores of other games, text and video chat with their fellow fans and access all the multimedia services available at the JMA Dome.”

“This is a truly transformative milestone in the life of the JMA Wireless Dome—both for the facility and for every individual who attends an athletic event, concert or other activity at the Dome,” says Jeff Rubin, special advisor to Chancellor Kent Syverud on esports and digital transformation. “Now, the 45,000 JMA Dome fans can share in a technological experience that is truly state-of-the art, providing them with connectivity on par with having a cell tower all to themselves. It’s an experience few will have at any other venue in the country.”

The JMA Dome now offers the most advanced 5G network in the country thanks to its tremendous partnerships with JMA Wireless and Verizon Wireless. To access the 5G network, Verizon users—and eventually all users—simply turn off the Wi-Fi feature on their phone.

“JMA is proud to be part of the team bringing 5G to the Dome and Orange fans,” says Andrew Adams, chief operations officer at JMA Wireless. “As members of this community ourselves, it’s special to know that the design and manufacture of key system components were done right here in ϲ. JMA’s advanced technology and design allows for easy capacity expansion in the future, ensuring this high-performance system keeps the Dome at the leading edge for many years to come.”

“Our 5G Ultra Wideband network is built specifically to support crowded events, providing reliability and massive capacity so customers can capture, share and connect throughout the experience,” says Kevin Smith, vice president of engineering and operations at Verizon. “Our engineers worked tirelessly to design and build the network to ensure our customers have the best possible experience.”

Today’s announcement builds on a $118 million transformation of the Dome, which included a new fixed roof, a vertically hung scoreboard—the largest in college sports, the installation of air conditioning and state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems.

“The new 5G network combined with all the enhancements we have made over the years has transformed the fan and visitor experience and further positions the JMA Dome and Central New York to compete nationally for large concerts, events and athletic competitions,” says Pete Sala, vice president and chief campus facilities officer. “I have been working at ϲ for nearly four decades and can say, without a doubt, there has never been a better time to attend an event at the Dome.”
