“This rise in the rankings is proof positive of the Whitman School’s continuing commitment to providing innovative programs in entrepreneurship at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. According to Bloomberg, its new, innovativehelps students determine whether pursuing an MBA is a financially viable path, and, if so, what are the best choices available to them. They based this on full-time MBA programs in the U.S.

The ROI calculator helps students make this decision using a standard measure of financial success: profit relative to initial principal, or ROI, built on the data reported to Bloomberg from surveys distributed for annual rankings. The calculator, which advances Bloomberg’s efforts to help potential MBA students make the best decision they can, is accompanied by reporting that considers the factors increasingly recognized as an important part of this assessment — though not easily quantifiable.

Whether or not an MBA will increase their earnings is a big concern for prospective students, since that is often a main reason for pursuing an MBA. The ROI Calculator demonstrates that the Whitman program does provide that return on investment, with an ROI of 22%. This is based on median cost (tuition and expenses), interest, net forgone income and the total MBA investment.

Whitman School of Management was prominently featured in The Princeton Review’s , and the program is ranked No. 21 among the Top 50 schools. In 2023, Whitman’s online MBA program was ranked No. 40.

The ranking is based on a combination of institutional and student survey data, including career outcomes, technological infrastructure, academic rigor, cost and affordability, among others. The survey also incorporates student opinions that The Princeton Review collected through its online MBA student survey and institutional data reported by administrators at the business schools. This year, the data reflects surveys of administrators at 165 business schools offering online MBAs and more than 10,700 online MBA students.

According to The Princeton Review, online MBA programs have become as rigorous as their on-campus counterparts. For many business school candidates, an online degree might even be the smarter choice. Online programs offer flexibility, affordability, access to innovative technologies, students from a diverse career backgrounds and global opportunities.

Here are some of the highlights of what Whitman students said:

  • The online MBA program provides “a solid educational and professional core,” “online interaction with classmates and the professor” and “flexibility of an online format instead of going part time attending classroom lectures.”
  • The school also offers immersion events “so that online students still have the opportunity to network with their peers.” This makes them feel as though they are “a part of the institution and not just a number.”
  • The majority of topics cover “current business practices and can be applied to current business problems.” While the amount of work can be “a lot to manage,” according to many students, “the way the classes are laid out makes it very easy for students to access, since there are many different days and hours students are able to choose from to accommodate their own work schedules.”
  • The asynchronous and synchronous classes “are often taught by two different people.” This often “helps students hear the same information in two different ways.” Supplementary “resources and videos” are also provided as extra support.
  • Discussions in class are “always thought-provoking” due to classmates who are “driven, intelligent and strive for excellence.”

The Hollywood Reporter (THR) has ranked the College of Visual and Performing Arts’ among the for the second consecutive year.

Ranked No. 23 in THR’s June 19 issue, the department was noted for such outstanding alumni as Aaron Sorkin ’83, H’12 and Vanessa Williams ’85, as well as the opportunities afforded by its relationship with , a professional theater company, and the immersive Tepper Semester in New York City.

The department offers four bachelor of fine arts degree programs in acting, musical theater, stage management, and theater design and technology, as well as a bachelor of science degree program in drama that features a theater management track. Poets&Quants’ methodology relies on three equally weighted (33.3%) sources of data: Admissions Standards (e.g., acceptance rate, SAT scores, diversity), Career Outcomes (e.g., placement at 90 days, compensation, internships) and Academic Experience (e.g., survey of recent alumni across a variety of satisfaction and experience scores).

Whitman’s rankings in each of these categories is:

  • Admissions Standards—No. 39 (No. 41 in 2022)
  • Career Outcomes—No. 38 (No. 32 in 2022)
  • Academic Experience—No. 53 (No. 56 in 2022)

Poets&Quants slightly altered its calculations this year, taking into consideration three years of data to help smooth out year-over-year fluctuations.

The Poets&Quants’ rankings methodology relies on three categories equally relating to admissions standards, employment outcomes at graduation and academic experience, the latter two of which are based on a survey of recent alumni. In each of these alumni-based categories, Whitman was rated higher than in the last two years and ranked No. 15 overall on academic experience. Of particular note was alumni satisfaction with live synchronous classes (ranked No. 10 nationally) and professor quality (ranked No. 7 nationally). Whitman was ranked No. 23 overall for career impact, with one-third of alumni reporting a promotion and an average 56% salary increase as a result of the program.

That is an important distinction because gathering such information as average SAT scores and starting salaries and bonuses, among other things, is not readily available anywhere else. This is the highest ranking ϲ has achieved in the history of its online undergraduate programs.

The University’s No. 13 ranking as Best Online Bachelor’s Programs for Veterans is a recognition of ϲ’s commitment to being the best school for veterans, active military and military-connected students, jumping 27 spots from last year’s rankings. ϲ is the only R1 private university in the Northeast that offers online and residential part-time undergraduate study to active-duty military, guard and reservists at their respective tuition assistance (TA) rates beyond the member’s annual benefit. The Best Public Affairs Schools rankings are based solely on surveys of deans, directors and department chairs representing 270 ٱ’s programs in public affairs and administration. The survey has been administered 12 times over 27 years; the Maxwell School has ranked No. 1 in every survey except one.

The U.S. News & World Report rankings methodology relies on three main categories, Quality Assessment (40%), Placement Success (35%) and Student Selectivity (25%). The Whitman School saw increases in two out of three of those categories for 2023.

“We are extremely proud of this latest achievement for our school. Our move to No. 57 is largely based on the strength of our admissions, curricular and co-curricular innovation, and placement efforts. We capitalized on student interest and were successful at attracting a very select class of graduate students,” says Dean Eugene Anderson. “Our career services team was able to facilitate an 87% placement rate at three months for the Class of 2021 versus 60% for the previous year’s graduates. “The recognition of our online bachelor’s programs is exceptional, given that our first year of eligibility to be ranked was 2021. This is the highest ranking the Whitman School has received from Poets & Quants, and an improvement from its No. 48 ranking last year. Whitman’s previous highest rank was No. 43 in 2020.

The Poets & Quants’ rankings methodology relies on three categories equally relating to Admissions Standards, Employment Outcomes at Graduation and Academic Experience based on a survey of young alumni. In each of these categories, Whitman was rated higher than in all previous years.

“We are very proud of this latest achievement for our school. Our move to No. 34 is largely based on the strength of our admissions and placement efforts,” says Dean Eugene Anderson. “We capitalized on a surge of prospective student interest during the past two years, and our career services team was able to facilitate a 90% placement rate at three months for the Class of 2021 versus 77% for the previous year’s graduates. The R1 distinction is based on an examination of 2019-2020 data. Criteria for research activity includes such factors as total research expenditures, full-time faculty and research staff, and number of postdoctoral fellows and doctoral degree conferrals. ϲ is one of 39 private doctoral universities classified as R1.

The Carnegie Classification, created by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and first published in 1973, is the widely accepted industry standard for classifying schools by higher education researchers and others. The U.S. Department of Education and many higher education associations use the classifications to organize data as well as determine a school’s eligibility for grant funding. The classifications are also used by U.S. News & World Report in grouping institutions by type for its popular Best Colleges rankings guide.

Described as an “objective snapshot of achievement,” Fordham’s rankings measure a law school’s performance in intercollegiate trial competitions in each academic year, starting with 2016-17. Points are allocated for semifinal and better finishes in single tournament national competitions and major regionals.

ϲ’s seventh-place ranking comes after a notable year for the College of Law’s advocacy program. High-profile team and individual successes included winning the regionals of the National Moot Court Competition and the Constance Baker Motley Mock Trial Competition; advancing two teams to the National Trial Competition; winning the New York State Tiffany Cup for the second year in a row; and invitations to the prestigious Top Gun and Tournament of Champions competitions.

Additionally, the College of Law hosted three intercollegiate competitions in fall 2019, including the first annual ϲ National Trial Competition.

“Our students delivered great results throughout the year, and their hard work and superb trial skill are recognized in our top 10 national ranking,” says Professor Todd Berger, faculty director of advocacy programs. “Volunteer coaches are a big part of our success. ϲ Architecture’s master of science (M.S.) in architecture program has been selected as the No. 22 (No. 7 in the U.S.) by Best Architecture Masters (BAM).

The Spain-based independent research platform selected 30 universities around the world from the best architecture schools in the to be compared and evaluated for the 2019 edition of its annual ranking.

BAM’s team of experts evaluated each school based on focused on quality and internationality of faculty, alumni and postgraduate program. Other essential variables for a program to be considered prestigious—such as relation with other universities, teaching approach, job opportunities and networking, publications and facilities—were also taken into account.

“Thanks to this methodology we are able to establish criteria to effectively and objectively compare study plans that, despite being different, are focused on the academic development of better architects,” notes BAM.

With a points, ϲ Architecture’s M.S. in architecture program tied for the No. 22 spot alongside Universidade de São Paulo’s master in architectural design.

Under the leadership of , assistant professor and coordinator of the M.S. program, ϲ Architecture’s Design | Energy | Futures research and design program has built a strong, global reputation since its inception in 2015.

Specifically targeted to individuals holding a professional degree in architecture, landscape architecture, urban design or urban planning, the program has attracted a diverse population of students from nearly a dozen countries over the past five years and at least one Fulbright Scholar each year.

The 30-credit-hour, three-semester concentrated curriculum is structured around a highly focused core of coursework including studios, research seminars and a capstone research and design project that collectively expand upon students’ architectural knowledge of energy and the built environment.

At the heart of the program, students are able to embrace the complex multi-disciplinary nature of architecture in the 21st century by exploring individual research and design interests supported by and from across the University and around the world.

“Our M.S. program aims to build the integration between design and research, and the bridge between academia and industry,” says Wang.

Student projects ranging across many scales—from urban design to high-performance buildings, from VR and computational simulation to material research and product design—have been recognized in the academy and industry and have won numerous international design and research awards including: second place in the Low Carbon City Future Center design competition (2015), winner of the Joan B. Calambokidis Innovation in Masonry Competition (2017), second place in (2018) and third place in the (2019).

“Every one of my studios has been exhibited and published,” says Wang, whose students have displayed their design proposals in top exhibitions worldwide such as the Shenzhen Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture (2017), Venice Architecture Biennale (2018) and Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism (2019).

Helping to strengthen ϲ Architecture’s ,’ Wang has also worked to expand the geographical reach of the job market beyond the U.S. by creating a network of internship and employment opportunities at top architecture offices in Asia for graduates. Students in the Design | Energy | Futures program have been successfully placed at AECOM, Perkins Eastman and URBANUS, among others.

“The M.S. in architecture program has been a great success,” says School of Architecture Dean Michael Speaks. “Building on that success, we are launching another master of science in architecture program next fall in New York City focused on real estate development. The curriculum and programming of the ϲ Architecture NYC program at the Fisher Center, which includes approximately 30 undergraduate students each semester, has focused on real estate the last four years. With the support of the Fetner Family Initiative, the program has expanded and is now providing a variety of experiential learning opportunities to ϲ Architecture and Whitman School students. Included among 120 R1 doctoral universities, ϲ continues to demonstrate a commitment to internationally recognized research and achievement of the goals set out in its academic strategic plan.

The R1 distinction is an indicator of “very high research activity” and is based on an examination of 2016-2017 data. Criteria for research activity includes such factors as research and development expenditures, research staff and number of doctoral conferrals. ϲ is one of only 34 private doctoral universities classified as R1.

Vice President for Research John Liu says the R1 distinction remains a critical affirmation of the University’s commitment to scholarship, creativity and innovation. “It acknowledges the impressive work that our faculty are already doing and inspires us to continue to build on the momentum by investing in new research activity and in our focus on the importance of relevant research in the hiring of faculty scholars.”

Stephen Masiclat, professor of new media management in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications and chair of the Senate Research Committee, says the retention of the R1 classification is the result of a great deal of work done across the University.

“In the Faculty Senate Research Committee, we’ve seen the leadership of our Vice President of Research John Liu in new research initiatives like the CUSE Grants and the new post-doctoral hiring program. We’ve also seen eager participation in new efforts across the campus to enlarge the research enterprise—from the new undergraduate research office to the campuswide cluster hires in exciting new areas. Retaining our R1 ranking is great news, but it’s no surprise.”

Jamie Winders, professor and chair of geography in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and the former chair of the Senate Research Committee, echoed Masiclat’s sentiment.

“Retaining R1 status is great for all parts of our campus, especially our students. We know that hands-on research opportunities have profound impacts on both graduate and undergraduate students. R1 status recognizes the centrality of the research mission to all that we do at ϲ, including our work with students,” says Winders.

The Carnegie Classification, created by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and first published in 1973, is the widely accepted industry standard for classifying schools by higher education researchers and others. Those programs performing in the bottom 25 percent were not ranked.

MBA@ϲ is Whitman’s premier distance-learning, part-time program for professionals and executives. Delivered in partnership withthe online program includes live, weekly, face-to-face sessions taught by Whitman professors in small seminar-style classes. The Hollywood Reporter (THR) has ranked the ’ Department of Drama among the in its May 24 issue.

The department was ranked no. 4, jumping four spots from its no. 8 ranking last year. The department has moved steadily up THR’s annual rankings since 2012.

“The department’s rise from the top 20 to the top five in just five years is a tribute to the sustained excellence of its faculty and staff and to the hard work of students in all our programs of study,” says Ralph Zito, professor and chair.

The article cited the ability for students to earn Equity points during their education, thanks to the department’s affiliation with ϲ Stage, an outstanding Equity theater company located in the same theater complex. This was the first time that Military Times evaluated cybersecurity programs. The rankings are based on academic rigor and efforts to recruit and work with veterans at colleges and universities.

“The strength of cybersecurity education at ϲ stems from our belief that technology, policy and people must work in tandem to keep America safe—the theme of the interdisciplinary curricula in our,” says Teresa Dahlberg, dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science. “The men and women that defend our country are ideally suited to master the skills needed to protect us from devastating attacks on our computing networks and infrastructure.”

MTϲ is routinely recognized for its work to welcome veterans to its campus and programs. In 2016, the College of Engineering and Computer Science earned the from the American Society of Engineering Education.

Currently, the Military Times’ Best for Vets: Colleges 2017 ranking places ϲ as the No. 1 private school in the country for service members, military veterans and their families.

Cybersecurity at the University addresses an acute need in the military, government and industry sectors for specialists in key aspects of cybersecurity. The programs challenge students to develop solutions for today’s issues and future threats.

The cybersecurity programs include the undergraduate Cyber Engineering Semester in partnership with the Air Force Research Laboratory to immerse students in cybersecurity training. About half of the students are ROTC cadets. Additional programs are the , and in cybersecurity in the College of Engineering and Computer Science.

Cybersecurity is a rapidly developing field. A recently estimated that the market will grow from $75 billion in 2015 to $170 billion by 2020. In 2015, about 209,000 cybersecurity jobs in the United States were unfilled, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics

In creating the list, Military Times weighted academic performance as one of the top factors for the ranking. The remaining factors included the number of Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET)-accredited computer science programs, the number of Centers of Academic Excellence designations, and the proportion of degrees awarded at a school that fall under computer science and computer security, respectively.

Data was provided by schools in the survey, as well as federal data and public information specific to computer science and cybersecurity. Federal data came from the U.S. Departments of Defense, Education and Veterans Affairs.

ϲ has moved from an “R2” designation to an “R1” designation, denoting “highest research activity,” in the 2015 Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

ϲ has moved into the top tier for research activity among all doctoral universities in the nation, according to the recently released 2015 Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

In the new rankings, which are issued twice a decade, ϲ moved from an “R2” designation in 2010, denoting a “higher research activity,” to an R1 designation, which is the top research class a university can be awarded. The distinction is based on an examination of recent data that helps Carnegie analysts gauge research activity as compared with other doctoral institutions. Criteria for research activity includes such factors as research and development expenditures, research staff and number of doctoral conferrals.

ϲ was one of 15 universities nationwide to move from R2 into the top category in the latest rankings.

“Earning this classification is powerful recognition of our efforts to grow and expand research” says ϲ Interim Provost Liz Liddy. “We have already identified research and discovery as a key focus area in our academic strategic plan, and this is one more step in the right direction. I am proud of my colleagues across all of the schools and colleges and look forward to many future accomplishments.”

Interim Vice President for Research Peter Vanable says this distinction is a strong affirmation of faculty scholarship. “It acknowledges the great work that our faculty are already doing” says Vanable. “This is a proud moment, but there is much more we can do to effectively build on this momentum, and we plan on doing just that.”

The Carnegie Classification, created by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and first published in 1973, is the widely accepted industry standard for classifying schools by higher education researchers and others. The U.S. Department of Education and many higher education associations use the classifications to organize data as well as determine a school’s eligibility for grant money. The classifications are also used by U.S. News and World Report in grouping institutions by type for its popular Best Colleges rankings guide.

The Carnegie Classification defines its doctoral grouping as those institutions that awarded at least 20 research/scholarship doctorates in 2013-14. Professional practice doctoral degrees, such as juris doctors, did not count toward that total.

This year, a total of 335 institutions were classified as doctoral. Within that doctoral grouping, institutions were further classified as R1 (highest research activity), R2 (higher research activity) and R3 (moderate research activity).

The film program in the College of Visual and Performing Arts’ Department of Transmedia was ranked No. 11 by the Hollywood Reporter (THR) on its list of the top 25 film schools in the United States.

, which appears in the Aug. 8 issue of THR magazine, highlights the program’s visiting artists—including director Abbas Kiarostami and actor Peter Weller G’05—and global and domestic study opportunities in such locations as Los Angeles; Bologna, Italy; and Prague, Czech Republic.

The fourth annual ranking was based on responses to a THR survey by guilds, Film Independent, the American Cinematheque and the schools, along with “the help of educational insiders.”

The School of Information Studies (iSchool) was ranked No. 1 in best online graduate degree programs in computer information technology for veterans by U.S. News & World Report.

The full rankings are available on the U.S. News & World Report, along with an of the iSchool’s graduate information technology program. This program was also ranked No. 5 overall for best online information technology programs in January of this year.

This is the second year that the U.S. News has released rankings for programs for veterans, and the first year that programs in computer information technology have been ranked.

Veterans “face their own challenges, such as dealing with deployments or grappling with mental orphysical wounds that can make it hard to adjust to life on campus,” notes the magazine’s on the methodology behind the rankings. “For some of these students, online programs provide an advantageous alternative to brick-and-mortar universities.”

At the iSchool, all master’s degree programs can be completed either on-campus or online. []

“We are proud to receive this recognition of our program with respect to higher education for veterans,” says iSchool Dean Elizabeth D. Liddy. “We have been a leader in the field of online learning since 1993, and we have been a strong supporter of education for our veterans. The iSchool has a long history of working with the military, in both veteran education initiatives and programs for members of the military who are currently serving our country.”

Programs at the iSchool that provide services to the military include the school’s with the U.S. Army Signal Center Cyber Leader College (SIGCEN) at Fort Gordon. This program provides an opportunity for officers who have completed courses at SIGCEN in capacities as information systems managers or telecommunication engineers to transfer credits that will count toward an M.S. in information management or M.S. in telecommunications and network management degree at the iSchool.

The iSchool was also a driving force in establishing the technology track of the at the University. Originally called the Veterans Technology Program, the curriculum, developed at the iSchool, prepares transitioning service members and spouses for new careers in operations information technology or human resources. ϲ’s currently administers this program. ϲ’s also provides student veterans with a personalized set of services from recruitment to degree completion.

“We are excited that our program has been recognized by U.S. News as a good opportunity for veterans,” says Victoria Williams, director of online education at the iSchool. “Active military and retired veterans across the world have a strong presence in iSchool online graduate programs. Our online format provides access to the same high quality education as our campus programs, and allows military students the flexibility needed to accommodate changes in deployment and advancements in career.”

For the rankings, U.S. News gathered, between July and September 2013, statistical information on student engagement, admissions selectivity, peer reputation, faculty credentials and training, and student services and technology. Complementing the statistical data was a separate peer reputation survey administered for U.S. News by Ipsos Public Affairs, a market research firm. Deans of business schools with online graduate programs and top distance-learning higher education academics were mailed postcards with links to online peer reputation surveys.

Last August, OnlineMBA.com ranked Whitman’s iMBA program #14 in its list of top 20 online MBA programs. Earlier in the year, the iMBA program was by Poets & Quants.

The iMBA is Whitman’s distance-learning, part-time program for professionals and executives. Launched in 1977, the program has grown to more than 240 current students and 900 alumni worldwide. Students attend five-day residencies on the SU campus each semester and complete their coursework online.

VPA’s industrial and interaction design program was ranked No. 3 in the nation for undergraduate industrial design programs and No. 1 in the east region. The ‘s Department of Entrepreneurship and Emerging Enterprises is one of the best in the nation, according to . The education services company has named the school #4 on its list of the “Top 25 Undergraduate Schools for Entrepreneurship Programs for 2014.” Whitman was ranked #11 on the list last year.

Based on surveys sent to school administrators at more than 2,000 institutions from April to June in 2013, the lists recognize 50 programs in all—25 undergraduate and 25 graduate—for their excellence in entrepreneurship education. The Princeton Review has reported these lists annually since 2006 in partnership with Entrepreneur Media Inc., publisher of Entrepreneur magazine.

“The entrepreneurial opportunities at ϲ are remarkable,” says Tom Lumpkin, the Chris J. Witting Chair in Entrepreneurship at the Whitman School. “The Entrepreneurship and Emerging Enterprises department and the Whitman School are leading the way in creating new opportunities and linking students, faculty, alumni and the university community to those opportunities. The Princeton Review chooses the schools based on a wide range of institutional data it evaluates for this project. The Martin J. Whitman School of Management has been ranked #26 by Military Times on its inaugural list of Best for Vets: Business Schools, the publication recently announced. The results are published in the March 2013 issue of Military Times EDGE.

Editors evaluated responses to a 60-question survey completed by 100 business schools, which included questions regarding academic policies, financial aid, academic and career support, academic success, campus culture and selectivity. The Best for Vets: Business Schools rankings also took into consideration each school’s answers to the Military Times’ previous survey of colleges and universities, the results of which were published in November 2012.

Since 1952, Whitman has offered educational programs serving military members and veterans. The (DCP) was founded in response to financial problems identified during World War II. More than 1,600 military and civilian personnel have attended the program and graduates have risen to the highest ranks of financial management in the Department of Defense (DOD).

Because various branches of the government have a growing need for individuals who understand and can develop, manage and lead the complex integration of goods, services and distribution in a variety of tactical situations, the Whitman School offers a (LOGTECH iMS). This competitive, limited-residency program provides its graduates—both active duty and civilian personnel—with a clear competitive advantage in the ability to strategically align critical supply chain support services with vital tactical objectives that meet DOD goals and objectives.

“This ranking is due recognition of the more than 60 years we have been collaborating with the Department of Defense in the delivery of financial management education to military and DOD civilians. In 2007, Barnes Professor of Entrepreneurship and former U.S. Air Force officer Mike Haynie worked with Whitman Dean Melvin T. Stith, a Vietnam veteran, to leverage the school’s faculty and top-ranked entrepreneurship programs to empower America’s veterans with disabilities to secure their own economic freedom in the most American way possible—through self-employment. As a result, the social venture the (EBV) was born.

The EBV offers self-employment career training, education and job creation for post-9/11 veterans with service-connected disabilities. It is now offered through a national consortium of eight world-class schools that includes Texas A&M, Purdue, UCLA, UConn, Louisiana State, Florida State and Cornell, with SU serving as national host. More than 600 veterans have graduated from the program, with more than 670 new jobs created as a result of their ventures.

VPA ranked No. 14 in multimedia/visual communications, a specialty that includes disciplines found in the college’s Department of Transmedia, which offers M.F.A. programs in art photography, art video, computer art and film. VPA also ranked No. 16 in ceramics, No. 19 in printmaking and No. 20 in sculpture, which are M.F.A. programs based in the Department of Art.

Maxwell has held the No. 1 spot since this rankings category was created in 1995.

Maxwell also ranked No. 1 in the public affairs specialties of public management administration, and public finance and budgeting, and in the top 10 in nonprofit management, information technology management, environmental policy and management, public-policy analysis, and city management and urban policy.

At the core of Maxwell’s reputation in public affairs is its master of public administration degree program, which was created nearly 90 years ago—the nation’s first such professional program. Maxwell is the only graduate school whose professional programs in public administration and international relations are integrated with its highly regarded social science departments (political science, economics, history, anthropology, sociology and geography).

“This connection between academic and professional programs is at the heart of what sets Maxwell apart from other schools of public affairs,” according to Dean James Steinberg. “Maxwell offers students a unique opportunity to integrate theory, policy and practice.”

The U.S. News public affairs program rankings are based on a survey of deans, directors and department chairs representing 266 master of public affairs and public administration programs nationwide. Respondents were asked to rate the academic quality of the master’s programs.

Newhouse “easily claimed the top spot,” according to an published in the December 2011 issue of NewsPro. Rounding out the top five were Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism; the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism; University of Missouri at Columbia School of Journalism; and the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism.

The survey was distributed to TVWeek.com and NewsPro readers, with 438 responding.
