While the mission has remained the same, the activities, events and performances have evolved over time to meet the interests of each class of students. To mark this history and celebrate with an afternoon of activities, UU is hosting their 60th Birthday Bash on the Quad from 1 to 5 p.m. on Friday, April 29.

The event will feature free snacks (while supplies last), including samples from Limp Lizard, Toss & Fire and Birdsong Café food trucks, inflatables, silent disco, a 360-photo booth, tie-dying, activations from several companies and many giveaways—a variety and breadth of attractions the group is excited to bring to campus given the event space. [Please note: Unfortunately, due to a mechanical issue that could not be resolved in time for tomorrow’s event, the Ferris wheel will not be available.]

“University Union has done an amazing job creating a full line-up of activities and providing an exceptional experience for the ϲ community in celebration of their anniversary,” says Tim Johnson, associate director in Student Activities. “I encourage our campus community to support the UU students and join us in ending the semester on a high note.”

Handler will soon return to the scripted television world as an executive producer of “Unspeakable,” a dramedy starring Mary McCormack for Hulu. It was also recently announced that Handler will continue to focus on work as an activist by joining forces with EMILY’s List to help elect more women to public office, register people to vote and campaign for candidates who are fighting for women’s rights. Handler has been honored by TIME magazine as one of its annual “TIME 100,” Glamour magazine as one of its 2011 Women of the Year; and the Human Rights Campaign, which gave her its Ally for Equality Award in 2009. T.J. Miller

T.J. Miller

Miller is one of the most sought-after comedians in the comedy world, but not in the drama world, or the finance world. He was named one of Variety’s “Top 10 Comics to Watch,” and EW’s “Next Big Things in Comedy.” Miller’s voice stars in Disney’s Academy Award-winning animated feature “Big Hero 6.” You may recognize his non-animated face and body from his roles in Fox’s big-screen comic book adaptation of “Deadpool,” 2014’s surprise indie hit “Transformers 4” and Mike Judge’s HBO comedy series “Silicon Valley,” for which he received the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Television Comedy.

He hosted Comedy Central’s MASH-UP, a mashup of standup, sketches and visualizations, and has appeared on “Chelsea Lately.” Miller has been in a number of major studio films, including “Cloverfield,” “She’s Out of My League,” “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World,” “Rock of Ages,” “Our Idiot Brother,” “Yogi Bear 3D,” “Unstoppable” and “Get Him to the Greek.” Miller voiced the character Tuffnut in the Oscar-nominated animated films “How to Train Your Dragon” and “How to Train Your Dragon 2.”

Comedians, actors and writers, The Lucas Bros (Keith and Kenny), continue their rise as two of the freshest, most dynamic new faces on the comedy scene. “In a short time … the Lucas Brothers have made a big impact on comedy,” lauds Vulture, and in April, their first hour standup special, “The Lucas Bros: On Drugs” premiered on Netflix. They were also recently seen as recurring characters on Season 1 of the hit Netflix series “Lady Dynamite,” starring fellow comic Maria Bamford. They are the creators of the animation series Lucas Bros. Moving Co., which aired for one season on Fox’s Animation Domination Hi-Def block in 2014 and for a second season on FXX. They also appeared in the blockbuster summer comedy feature film “22 Jump Street” alongside Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum and Ice Cube.

Tickets on Sale Wednesday Morning for Humans of New York Creator Brandon Stanton /blog/2017/02/07/tickets-on-sale-wednesday-morning-for-humans-of-new-york-creator-brandon-stanton/ Wed, 08 Feb 2017 02:02:39 +0000 /?p=113671 Tickets for the March 6 presentation by (HONY) creator Brandon Stanton go on sale at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 8, and are $5 for SU and SUNY-ESF students with I.D. at the Schine Box Office and $10 for faculty, staff and the public at .

Stanton—named one of Time Magazine’s 30 Under 30 People Changing the World—is speaking for the series; his appearance is co-presented by . The event is Monday, March 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the Schine Student Center’s Goldstein Auditorium. Doors open at 6:45 p.m.

Stanton started the photography blog Humans of New York in late 2010 with the goal of photographing 10,000 New YoBrandon Stantonrkers and creating “an exhaustive catalogue of the city’s inhabitants.” “Somewhere along the way, I began to interview my subjects in addition to photographing them,” Stanton says. “And alongside their portraits, I’d include quotes and short stories from their lives.” The response was remarkable.

The Humans of New York page now has more than 18 million fans, the companion account 6.5 million followers and the account 580,000 followers. In addition to providing a worldwide audience with daily glimpses into the lives of strangers on the streets of New York City, HONY has expanded over the past five years to feature stories from more than 20 different countries.

Stanton also branched out into publishing, with “Humans of New York” (St. Martin’s Press, 2013), which spent 45 weeks on The New York Times Bestsellers List, and the follow up “Humans of New York: Stories” (St. Martin’s Press, 2015).

Stanton grew up in Marietta, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta, and majored in history at the University of Georgia. After graduation, he traded bonds in Chicago. In 2010, he bought a camera and started shooting photos in downtown Chicago on weekends. When Stanton lost his job a short time later, he moved to New York City and decided to pursue photography full time, which led to the creation of HONY.

Stanton traveled to the Middle East in August 2014 to photograph people as a part of a 50-day trip through 10 countries under the auspices of the United Nations. The following summer, he traveled to Pakistan and Iran. At the conclusion of the Pakistan visit, Stanton crowd funded $2.3 million to help end bonded labor in the country. It was the first of several successful online funding efforts for HONY.

In January 2015, Stanton posted a photo of Vidal Chastanet, a teenager at Mott Hall Bridges Academy, located in a crime-plagued neighborhood in Brooklyn. Chastanet said his life had been most influenced by the principal at his school. Stanton spent the next two weeks profiling the school and the principal, Nadia Lopez.

At the same time, Stanton urged his followers to contribute to a crowdfunding campaign to send the school’s students on a visit to Harvard University to expand their ideas of their potential. The goal was $100,000. The total raised was $1.4 million. The effort caught the , and Stanton, Chastanet and Lopez were invited to meet President Obama in the Oval Office.

More recently, Stanton began posting stories and photos from the pediatrics department of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. And, as before, he launched a to raise funds for pediatric cancer research. The target was $1 million. To date, more than 104,000 people have donated $3.875 million.

Stanton is the second of three spring speakers for the University Lectures. The series concludes on April 5 with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Sonia Nazario.

The University Lectures welcomes suggestions for future speakers. To recommend a speaker, or to obtain additional information about the series, write tolectures@syr.edu.

How University Union Makes It Happen /blog/2015/04/22/how-university-union-makes-it-happen-81850/ /?p=80213 2015 Block Party tank is latest addition to University Union's wall of accolades.

2015 Block Party tank is latest addition to University Union’s wall of accolades.

On Friday, thousands of ϲ and SUNY ESF students will enjoy both Mayfest and Block Party. Mayfest is a free concert for all students, taking place in Walnut Park during the afternoon; Block Party is a ticketed event in the Carrier Dome later that night.

This year’s Mayfest is headlined by The Knocks, an electronic music duo based out of New York City. The Knocks climbed to fame as formidable producers for beats and remixes of songs from popular artists like Kesha and Flo-Rida, as well as their own original music. The Mayfest lineup also includes Skizzy + Mars, AYO Alex and Vérité.

Block Party features even more prominent artists. Kygo and 50 Cent with G-Unit are co-headlining, with performances from opener Rae Sremmurd of “No Flex Zone” fame. Kygo is a DJ known for both his popular remixes and his hit singles “Firestone” and “Stole the Show,” the latter of which has reached Top 5 on the charts in six countries, as well as hit No. 1 in three.

However, the most impressive part of these dual events is not the lineup, but the process it takes to assemble it. Both events, as well as many other concerts and screenings throughout the school year, are planned and hosted by University Union, a student-run organization here on campus.

Public Relations Co Director Alli Reich meets with her team.

Public Relations Co Director Alli Reich meets with her team.

“To make sure we have everything covered, we start planning six to eight months in advance,” says University Union Concert Director Evan Wilson. “Nothing is left to chance.”

Wilson is a senior in the Bandier program, a highly competitive music industry program within the . He’s been involved with University Union since the first day of his freshman year, and has held an assortment of positions, including marketing advisor, Mayfest talent buyer and assistant director.

About the booking process Wilson explains, “The first issue we have to tackle is availability. If an artist is out of the country, how do we route them here? Who’s in the area? What are the benefits of geographic convenience versus artist popularity? We have to do what makes the most economic sense, both in terms of booking and ticket sales.”

He elaborates that every concert University Union hosts has three basic steps: research, book and market. The research portion examines blogs, billboards, student surveys and other musical reviews to develop potential acts. Next, University Union starts negotiating, reaching out to agents and determining feasibility. Once they can come to an agreement, an offer is issued. As contracts come into play, the goal is to fully execute as quickly as possible, booking the artist well in advance of concert day.

“We want these artists as soon as possible. They’re getting offers from all over the place,” states Wilson, emphasizing the importance of efficiency in the crucial booking stage. He goes on, “We also work closely with the university; catering services provides free food and drinks to students all throughout the day during Mayfest, and the Carrier Dome staff is vital to Block Party.”

Once the artist is locked in, it becomes the responsibility of the public relations and marketing teams to develop both a physical and digital plan to promote the concert. They build a specific and strategic timeline, mapping out the time leading up to the concert week by week and day by day.

“My staff is responsible for press releases, official comments and other promotional tools,” says Alli Reich, the public relations co-director. “In order to do that, we need to reach out to the artists’ managers. We also collaborate closely with the marketing team to ensure the best promotion for the show.”

Reich is a junior in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, with a major in theater management. Reich is also enrolled in the with a minor in public communications. In addition to the promotion leading up to the event, she is also responsible for all day-of-show photography and artist interviews.

As Reich manages her team, Wilson’s team is communicating with the artists to make sure the venue is ready. He explains that every artist has what’s called a “rider,” or a list of all technical and hospitality requirements. “We need to go through that list and see what we can and cannot accommodate, and work with the artist to find something that works for everybody.”

To add one final layer, all of this is happening simultaneously for both Mayfest and Block Party. While Wilson and Reich lead the charge for the entire, combined event, there are actually two teams of University Union members working on the two different shows. The two teams share research and work together to make sure that the event is flawless for the students attending.

Mayfest and the now-sold-out Block Party are this coming Friday. Mayfest begins at 1 p.m. in Walnut Park, and the Carrier Dome doors open at 6:30 p.m. for Block Party.

50 Cent to Headline Block Party /blog/2015/04/01/50-cent-to-headline-block-party-12916/ Wed, 01 Apr 2015 14:55:55 +0000 /?p=78962 University Union will host its annual Block Party on April 24 in the Carrier Dome. The event will follow Mayfest in Walnut Park with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. This year’s line up will feature rappers 50 Cent with G-Unit and EDM artist Kygo as co-headliners, with hip-hop duo Rae Sremmurd performing as direct support.

block party 03172015 poster50 Cent exploded onto the music scene in 2003 and has been rewriting hip-hop history ever since. “Get Rich or Die Tryin’,” his debut album, made history when it sold 872,000 copies, breaking the record for first-week sales of any major label debut in the entire Sound Scan era. It was a number-one Billboard album for six weeks and was certified platinum nine times by the Recording Industry Association of America. To date, 50 Cent has sold more than 22 million albums worldwide and has received numerous awards and 13 Grammy nominations throughout his career. The enormous success of his music career paved the way for 50 Cent the rapper to become 50 Cent the record company executive. As CEO of G-Unit Records, 50 Cent oversees a stellar roster of music artists, including Tony Yayo and Lloyd Banks, among others, many of whom have garnered multi-platinum status under his aegis.

Tipped by Billboard Magazine as the “the next EDM superstar,” Kyrre Gørvell-Dahll, a.k.a KYGO, has gone from bedroom producer to one of the most-hyped electronic artists on the planet in unprecedented time. Having established himself as a household name thanks to his widely popular remixes, sell-out shows in North America and Europe as well as headline performances at festivals including TomorrowWorld and Findings, KYGO signed a worldwide recording deal with Sony Music Entertainment in September. His first original track, “Firestone,” released at the end of 2014, has now amassed over 7 million plays across SoundCloud and YouTube and over 40 million plays on Spotify, peaking at number four on the worldwide Spotify chart. With a hotly anticipated album scheduled for 2015, plus a new live show due to be unveiled at Ultra Music Festival, this is only the beginning for this 24-year-old Norwegian prodigy.

After earning the attention of fellow Tupelo native P-Nasty, the brothers behind Rae Sremmurd, Slim Jimmy and Swae Lee, were introduced to multi-platinum producer Mike WiLL, who was instantly impressed by the brothers’ energy and the quality of their music, signing the duo as one of the first acts to his new, Interscope-backed label, Eardruma Records. Rae Sremmurd’s first single under the Eardruma Records umbrella, “No Flex Zone,” serves as an early taste of what Rae Sremmurd will offer fans with their forthcoming debut mixtape, “SremmLife.” Scheduled for release this year, the project will be executive produced by Mike WiLL Made-It.

Tickets for Block Party are on sale online at Ticketmaster.com. A student pre-sale for full-time SU and ESF students will run to Friday, April 3, at noon, and will be online only.
